Living in a state of stress is NOT normal. Let's create a 'new normal'
I read a beautiful quote this morning on Instagram from @morganharpernichols
‘Exchange overthinking for overwhelming peace’.
Wow imagine if we were overwhelmed with peace 🤯
The thing is, a state of stress, busyness, overwhelm and overthinking has become our normal. We accept that this is the baseline of the way we live life. We accept that to get things done and be an efficient person that stress and overwhelm is just part of the deal. Suck it up.
I’m saying this out loud: A state of stress is NOT normal. Our bodies are not designed to operate in this as a continuous state. This should be the exception, where we only hop into our stress response when shit hits the fan.
Our bodies normal baseline state is to be calm, peaceful, rested and relaxed. In this state our bodies can get on with what they are supposed to do - digest food, think and process things clearly, be creative and have the capacity for love, kindness and empathy. Hmmm, might be just the thing the world needs right now eh??!
All this talk of a ‘new normal’. I would like to see 'Overwhelming peace' be the 'new normal'. Imagine that. It is possible, but we need self-awareness. We need space and gaps in our day to actually be able to know when we are stressed before it turns into a full meltdown. We need to know there is another way, that we don't have to accept stress as a normal state, and each of us one at a time can challenge each other to say no to that way of being.
I talked about this on Instagram as part of my meditation Monday this week. You can check out the video and practice a meditation with me here.
I have had to challenge and change my own anxious stressed state through running my business. It has taken me a long time to unlearn old patterns that I had when I was in the workplace, so that I can stay emotionally healthy in my business and my life. This something that I'm really passionate about for all business owners and self-employed people, because I know how easy it can be to get pulled into the idea that to have a successful business you need to be slave to it.
