Why choosing to do something positive doesn't always FEEL positive...

Choosing to do something that we know is good for us doesn’t always FEEL good in the moment.

When I talk about making a positive disruption, it may sound like it should feel positive and empowering and sometimes it totally can be. When I’m in a pattern of feeling tense and anxious and I choose to focus on my breath, it disrupts that uncomfortable and familiar pattern of anxiety and feels relieving and reassuring.

But my positive disruptions don’t always give me the instant hit of joy. Choosing to meditate or practice yoga can in the moment feel boring, pointless and dull, but I know that overall they are a positive for me and over time I know that I experience more joy, calm and ease in my days for practicing them.

It’s natural for us to want to hold on to old habits, routines and patterns because at some point they served a purpose, maybe kept us safe and they are familiar.

So don’t be hard on yourself if it feels less than positive to follow your positive disruptions. Understand why it’s hard, and listen to your own best friend inside who can see beyond the discomfort of change and who knows the good stuff is on the other side.
