A not so unexpected, but very important, benefit of healing your emotional wounds
This one is for the parents AND for anyone who is a role model to kids in their lives (pretty much most of us).
Something that often comes up in my sessions from those with children, or even those considering having kids is this..
‘I know I’ve got this problem with anxiety/people pleasing/a pattern I’ve inherited from my family (insert something you keep getting stuck with), and I’m really scared I’m passing it on to my kids’
It gives me a lot of hope when people talk this way, because raising kids is really bloody hard, and most people love them and want to do the best they can for them.
We’ve all inherited the good the bad and the ugly from our families, because they are messy, flawed humans that did the best they could with what they knew at the time. As we become adults we realise this, because we are now the messy, flawed adults and/or parents trying to do our best too.
And I may not be a parent myself, but I have my own experiences of working for decades with children and teens who have had very challenging and traumatic upbringings, whilst also having a big role in raising my niece and nephew. I understand how humans develop and what they need to thrive.
So when people work with me, this is one of the most important benefits…
Parents feel more confident about NOT f***ing up their kids.
Or at least less likely to.
When someone with children works with me, I know that we are working with their kids too.
The fact they are with me and open and willing to unlearn unhelpful patterns that are keeping them stuck is such an encouraging sign for the next generation.
And kids don’t need perfect parents.
They need parents that are awake and aware and willing to look at their messy parts and do their best to heal them.
Gold. Pure gold that is. A bloody gift to the world.
And whether you choose to work with me or someone else to heal those patterns, you showing up for yourself and choosing to break these generational cycles is what makes the difference.
I’d go as far as to say it’s one of the most important things we need to do for the future of humanity right now.
I hope you read this email with the compassion and honesty it’s intended, and not to beat yourself up about your perceived ‘flaws’. If you’ve read to the end of this letter, be proud of being curious enough to take this message in.
