We can't plan for the future if we are not in the present
Ooh there’s a lot of back to school vibes going on this week eh?
Even though I don’t have kids, I can’t help but absorb the shiny shoe/new pencil case energy that’s floating around in the air, along with a ton of leaves on the ground and darker nights (which much to my partner’s confusion - I love!). Yep, I’m definitely an autumn gal - sorry summer folks :)
And along with this, my clients seem to be wanting to look forward to the future and what that holds for them. Wanting to have a sense of direction, a vision of something that makes them feel excited. While this sounds like a positive thing, it can actually sometimes cause a lot of frustration if we just don’t know what we want.
What if we don’t have a clear vision, a sense of direction, a knowing of what we want in our future?
We can spend a lot of time and energy thinking about this and looking at others who seem to have a grand plan - ‘oh they’ve got it all sorted’.
We can feel a sense of urgency, that we are running out of time and wasting our life.
And all the while we are spending our energy hankering after the elusive future, we are disconnected from ourselves in the here and now. Disconnected from who we are in the present.
It makes sense that we don’t know what we want for our future, if we have forgotten who we are and what lights us up now.
So the job is to reconnect.
Reconnect to the parts of us we have forgotten, left behind or that have just got buried under layers of life admin over the years.
Reconnect to our pure, undiluted, innocent selves who know exactly what we want.
Reconnect to our sense of aliveness.
To do this we have to identify what’s got in the way. What are those patterns that we’ve inherited that have got us to this point, but can’t take us any further? It can be hard to let go of this, because we don’t know what will be there instead. It’s new territory and can feel a bit wobbly at first.
But what we reveal when we start letting go of those old patterns is that pure, undiluted, innocent part of us who is deeply wise and knowing. That holds the vision for the future and has the courage to help us create it.
I could write another hundred letters on how we walk this path, because each person is unique and has their own timeline, and that’s the path I walk with my clients - supporting them to come back to their wholes selves, right here, right now.
So if you are struggling to see your future, and feel like you’ve lost direction in life, know that there is no big answers out there you need to find. It’s about reconnecting to who you really are in the here and now.
